How to shop for a saree by video

When two sarees look much the same on a phone, ask to see them side by side. Keep the item code or link beside your notes for each piece. It’s much easier to ask for “the green with the narrow border” again when you also have its reference.

Before the call

Share your budget, the date you need the saree and one detail that matters most. A request such as “I’ll be sitting through a morning ceremony and want a narrow border that still shows in the front pleats” gives the person showing you the sarees something to demonstrate. If you have a saree that fits the way you like, measure its draping length and width for comparison. Include your time zone when suggesting a viewing time. Request a video viewing with SPP Silks.

Ask for three views of each piece

  1. The full width. Ask to see the main fabric with both long edges in view, then the pallu spread open. If a blouse piece is included, have it shown next to the body. These views help place a detail you first saw in close-up. Identify the parts of an open saree.
  2. A few front pleats. Ask to see one layer of the body against a plain background, then the same section gathered into a few front pleats. Watch how much of the motif shows and how the lower border sits in the folds.
  3. The two colours together. Ask the seller to hold both sarees in the same light and tilt each one gently. With some two-tone weaves, the folds catch the light in different colours. You might ask, “Does this green lean towards blue or yellow when you look at the cloth?” Your screen and the lighting can shift the shade you see. If a blouse has to match exactly, try to see the actual fabrics together. See The Met’s example of two-tone silk.

Before you order

Ask for the draping length excluding any blouse fabric, the width, the stated fibre composition and the care instructions for the exact item code you chose. If the seller mentions Silk Mark, ask to see the attached label and its number. Check what Silk Mark covers.

Get the item reference, total including delivery, and expected dispatch and arrival dates in writing. Before asking for the blouse piece to be separated or a fall stitched inside the hem, check how the alteration would affect exchange eligibility. Read SPP’s returns and exchange terms.
